Clever bods will spot that these are the strings from "You and Yours" naked (as it were). I always imagined some kind of orchestral start to the album as 1) I am pretentious and 2) I am a sucker for Nelson Riddle's arrangements for Frank Sinatra but more realistically 3) I love the orchestral elements in albums like Simon and Garfunkel's "Bookends", Suede's "Dog Man Star", Buffalo Springfield's "Buffalo Springfield Again", definitely Pulp's "I Love Life" (obscure choice) and (one for the boys) the Verve's "A Northern Soul". Oh, and "Goodnight" off the White Album. When I first heard that Octopus's Garden mash up with the strings off the aforementioned track on the "Love" album, I blubbed my bloody eyes out.
And so, wanting something extra for "You and Yours" (if a song verges on the cheesy, you may as well camp it up properly), I persuaded my talented friends Tom Walker and Pete Sorel-Cameron to come to recently rioting Hackney on a Sunday, when they should have been otherwise engaged (moving house and wedding planning respectively) and add their delicate bowing. Sitting their in delight, i realised their efforts were too good to sit in the background and thus the intro was born....
